type issues

For some reason when I try to add type to any document in Illustrator it looks like it's trying to simplify a path and the text just looks absolutely terrible. This happens as soon as I hit the type tool and begin typing. Creating outlines doesn't change anything, and it's not a brush applied either. I attached photos as I don't know how to describe better even what the problem is. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.
