Variable data within one illustrator file?

I am trying to create 1000 stickers, individually numbered. They will be printed in sheets of 35. I have the artwork duplicated and tiled. Each piece of the artwork has a text element that needs to be numbered 0001-1000. Is there a way to use variable data merge to pull in an number each sticker without having 1000 separate pdfs?

If you use InDesign's data merge for that, you could do the numbering and tiling in there.

Illustrator's variables function does work differently.

Maybe this can be scripted. So you might want to tag this post with scripting to attract the scripters.
