Variable font appears static

I'm attempting to use a variable google font (Spline Sans) in Illustrator/Photoshop but it only loads the five static weights (Light/Regular/etc) and doesn't present the axis button to adjust the weight.

 

Other variable fonts work including both Adobe and Google variable fonts.

When you download Spline Sans, the expanded downloaded folder contains both a folder named Static which contains various static (non-variable) versions of the font and SplineSans-VariableFont_wght.ttf. Make sure that SplineSans-VariableFont_wght.ttf is what you install. When it is, then Illustrator's Character panel shows the Variable Font button where you can access the slider to change the weight:
