Question

Anchored Photos from Word

I imported a Word doc with photos into InDesign Book, just so I know where the photos go (as place holders). Now I want to replace them, with better images, that I can move around. Is there a way to un-anchor all the images? This is a 200 page book. Appreciate any help.

A tip I learned from Bob Levine on InDesignSecrets.com (now CreativePro.com):

"The DOCX format is really just a glorified ZIP file. Change the file extension to ZIP and extract the contents and you’ll have instant access to the graphics."

Then you will be able to place the graphics wherever you want in the InDesign file.

That is good to know, but not exactly my current issue. I already have the images outside of Word.  The problem is I flowed the Word doc WITH "Import Inline Graphic" option selected. Now the images seem to be locked in place and I'm struggling to take them out 1 at a time.

So do the images which are now embedded in the InDesign file appear in the InDesign Links panel? Do they appear like this?

If so, go to the Links panel menu and choose Unembed Link. When ask if you want to link them to the original image(s), choose No. When asked where to store them, create a new Image Folder (or whatever you want to call it) and save the files in that folder. InDesign unembeds each image and saves it it in the folder, and properly links to the file.

See if that works for you. I'm getting this info from a 2014 video from InDesignSecrets.com which describes this process.
