I have automatic endnotes that are behaving strangely in terms of line-breaks. Small words that clearly should fit on a previous line are not coming back, even if I insert a soft or hard return.
Paragraph composer is set to Adobe Paragraph Composer. Changing this setting does nothing.
I'm not seeing anything too egregious or inexplicable; InDesign can be conservative about breaking lines when they come close to a margin. First thing to check is if there's a right inner margin specified on that text frame (Ctrl-B, look at Inset Spacing). Then see if there's a right margin applied to the End Note paragraph style that might be reduced to give ID more room to place text.
Thanks James. I have a 0p4 right indent, and I've been taking that into account. What is really strange is if I put a given endnote in a new text box of the same width, but without the linking to the auto endnotes, it sets completely differently. And using the same style sheet. See new screen-grab, with separate text box at top.
Huh. Assuming that you've checked to see if the same, umodified style is applied to both (and no Character Styles anywhere in the string), and that there's really no extra inset margin on the text frame below... I'm stumped. I don't think ID does anything "special" or "smart" here, such as keeping parenthesized terms unbroken. But something is certainly at play here...
