Data Merge in Indesign 2023

Question

I've never had so many issues and have checked all document information in textedit.

When selecting my data souce it is making it a "link", (has it always done this?) but the fields aren't showing in the data merge window.

It will also advise me of the "have permission of the file" notice everytime. In which I have the source and its closed.

Any insight or tips to merging in 2023? I've never had issues in doing this in pervious versions of the stoftware.

Creating a link should be fine. Check your file encoding, that maybe the reason that the data is not being read by InDesign. Try encoding the file in UTF-16 BE encoding. About file permission, are you on a MAC, if so then see if your InDesign installation has access to the location or not.
