Master Page Insert Numbers Black Blob

InDesign 2022 updated two days ago. Now when I try to insert page numbers via the 'Parent' pages, using 'Type/Insert Special Charcter/Markers/Current Page' I get a black blob where there should be a letter. I don't get this with a completely new 'Book' doc so it must be me? Anyone?

As Willi says, you have overrides applied to your page number text and possibly the frame.

On the Parent page, click in the page number box. In Colors, make sure the stroke color is set to "None." Best if you save/set a style for footers/page numbers if you have not.

Click to select the page number text frame. Same thing: make sure no stroke is applied.

For one reason or another, you probably had this very thick stroke set when you created the page number frame and wildcard.

A pro tip: if you click a setting (color, font size, stroke, etc.) with no object selected, that becomes a default applied to every new object until you clear it. Clear such settings by clicking away from any pasteboard object so that nothing is selected, and then set a reasonable default (such as black/no stroke, a modest text size, etc.)

Thank you. I didn't see your post, James. I will follow what you say and get back to you both. I do have a page-number style set so I'll try with that.

Yep. I used the page number style and that works! I am grateful to both of you.

The font type on the master has a stroke, a very thick stroke applied. Remove it and make the paragraph style of the page number correct.

Thank you, but I tried to follow you and it didn't work. Same old black blob., no letter

You have a stroke applied to the page number text. Remove it.
