New 17.4.1 version will not convert files

I jsut upgraded to the new 17.4.1 version but it will not convert my old files. They get to 33% and then come back with the message saying:

Unable to convert “filename.indd” to InDesign Markup Language (IMDL)
Try again later. If the problem persists you may want to contact “filename.indd” author who can convert this document into IMDL for you.

I have used my old version of InDesign and saved it as an IMDL file. Then tried to open it in the new 17.4.1 version and it gets to a certain point and stops and locks up.

What gives here, am I doing something wrong?

Rick

Here is a followup.

I am sorry about the confusion. I was trying to export and inport IMDL files.

I was also confused. I have just upgraded to the latest version of InDesign and it no longer opens the newest version of InDesign when I double click the file in explorer. It tries to open the file in the older version. That was why I was trying the import and export funtion until I realized what my issue was.

I can't seem to make it open in the newest version of InDesign. I have to open it in the newest version and then navigate using the dropdown File-->Open and manually go to the file to open it.

Ah, that has nothing to do with InDesign but has to do with file association of your OS, in this case Windows;-) You have to reset that to the correct version of InDesign. That said, I think File/Open is always the best way to do 😉

Your post is very confusing: InDesign does not 'convert' files.

Do you mean 'Open files'?

So if I understand correctly: you saved(!) your v16 files as 'idml' in the save options, and now you try to open that .idml in v17 and that does not work?

The latest version by the way is v18.

This post makes little sense to me. Can you expand on what you're doing here and why? System details might help, too.

The newest version of InDesign is InDesign 2023, version 18.1.
