Question

Paragraph Styles will not apply

I am setting up a file to use paragraph styles, and after I set the style (font, weight, size, spacing, etc), it does not apply to the text that I select. I am applying a font with a weight of "Light" but whenever I highlight the text and apply the style, the font that is applied is the "bold" weight of the typeface. I have no character styles applied, and I have overridden the paragraph style to ensure there are no conflicting styles, but still am not able to apply the style I want.

I just updated InDesign hoping that would resolve the issue but it has persisted. Please let me know what fix I can do to make my paragraph styles apply as expected.

Thanks all for the questions/suggestions, I checked all of these things and did not resolve my issue through the suggested fixes, but I looked in the style and there's all kinds of wacky stuff in the Style Settings that I did not include or intend to include (this file has been handed back and forth among various people and I am trying to clean it up).

I ended up clicking "reset to base" and created the style from scratch so it didn't have all the weird "hidden" formatting that shows here. Screenshot below of what it looked like before resetting the style.

Such files are often corrupt and can work perfectly except in maddening small ways. The solution is often to 'purge' the file of accumulated crud and flaws by saving or exporting to IDML, then opening and saving under a new INDD file name.

This will sometimes lead to small breakages in the layout that will need to be fixed, but at the reward of a doc de-glitched in many ways.

Since this sounds suspiciously like another recent thread, I will ask: what exactly is the font family?

the font is Averia Serif Libre, a font downloaded from Google Fonts but used frequently in my work.

Hi @defaultqgmzy9s5p3e6:

  1. What version of InDesign are you using?
  2. Did you try selecting the paragraph and Alt/Opt clicking on [None] in the Character style panel and then Alt/Option clicking on your new style in the Paragraph panel?
  3. When you enable the Style Override Highlighter (the [a+] button at the top of the Character and Paragraph panels) does any teal coloring show up?

Really simple question... are you saving/ updating the paragraph style after defining it?
