LRC is unusably slow:

16-30+ seconds in library to load every pagefull of RAW CR2 images on 27" Intel iMac 64GM RAM
I've tried disabling graphics ( and restarting).
Smart previews exist for all images.

suggestions please

Iv'e looked at activity monitor and occasionally it s LRC is not responding...then it does

High CPU at start.

In your LrC, once started, in your catalog. Do you have any activity running that may slow things down.

specifically:

  • Face Detection running, not paused. Face detection especially as it is a CPU hog.
  • Address Lookup running, not paused
  • Sync to cloud running, perhaps started at one point but never finished

a references on that:

AFAICS none of those are running

I have checked as far as I can that I have pressed the right buttons ( so to speak) in the right places but I am unfamiliar with those functions as I never have had need of any of them

Having checked Adobe community discussions on them in reasonably confident they have never been on and are currently off

So, when we look at the screenshots the author posted (attached). some oddity's show up

In Activity Monitor, under Memory, LrC appears to be stalled

while under CPU, LrC appears to be using way too much

I am no longer a MACOS user, so I cannot bring this up and study directly. For any member that is, that % CPU, what does 1.508.2 indicate? Ok, that represents multi cores in heavy use? Not actually 1000%. And apparently the CPU is so busy that the activity monitor is having trouble presenting the truth??

And when we look at the bottom of that second screenshot (I missed this). It is more like 99% (bad) heavily under User.

And per: https://support.apple.com/lt-lt/guide/activity-monitor/actmntr43452/mac

"User: The percentage of CPU capability that's being used by apps you opened, or by the processes opened by those apps."

So LrC in this case.

Ok, so an inquiry to the OP/Author.

1. When those previews finally load, when LrC finally responds, does it then behave until you close it?

2. If you close LrC, then restart the MAC, does LrC once again behave poorly?

Thank you for your comments. To answer your questions: once the images load (appear) which may even take a mere 5 secs, LRC may at that point start to misbehave ( stop responding) but after it has finished whatever it was that  then had taken it +/-30 secs, it returns to normal and once again behaves at an expected speed

If I then scroll down to the next  page ( the next images to view) the same issues repeat.

sometimes all the images show in 5 secs, sometimes they take ages. It has already separately created smart previews for the whole catalog. CR2 images will take longer to load but often load initially quickly.

either way scrolling to the next page will freeze everything ( can't scroll, spinning ball, clicking an image won't highlight it etc ) either immediately or after 5-10 secs.

on quitting and restarting LRC it may work faster for the first page or second but then scores to this crawl until it clears whatever it's doing

if I scroll from a page where it had finished mucking about back to a page it had just previously shown I get the same behaviour so it doesn't resolve whatever issue it has if you return to it

closing and restarting Mac makes no difference

This word "page" that you keep using. I do not understand that use of that word in LrC.

Can you take a video capture of what is occurring and share that?

16-30+ seconds in library to load every pagefull of RAW CR2 image

  • Is that for one RAW or many RAW files?
  • And is that at Import, or later?
  • And what do you mean by "pagefull"?

By page full I mean the whole of the 27" screen space available in LRC

NOT IMPORT, files are already there some worked on before , most not

somet RAW files, sometimes RAW and tiff or psd, jpg etc

You need to be more specific. I assume you mean a page of the Grid view, so maybe 20 small images? Do you mean that you have to wait so long for Lightroom to do anything, or do you mean the page comes up quickly but it takes up to 30 seconds for all the thumbnails to show? If Lightroom does not have up to date thumbnails, then it needs to build them. That can take 1 or 2 seconds per thumbnail depending on the speed of your computer, so up to 30 seconds to see a page with say 20 thumbnails is not excessive in that case.
