Can only type in 1 character in metadata fields after startup

When I start Lightroom Classic and attempt to enter a value into any metadata field, only 1 character is accepted and then the box bexcomes inactive.  I have to highlight it again and retype the entry.  After this one time, it works fine.  But after every restart, it repeats this behavior.
