external hard drive

Hi,

I would like to see all my material saved to en external harddrive while I work. My LR IRCAT catalogoue, which I do not know what it actually does takes up too much space on my labtop and I would rather see it on an external drive. How do I do this?

Thanks in advance,

Jockum

It's the Library previews that take up a lot of space, not the catalog. (which has the extension LRCAT)

My catalog file is 933 MB, while the previews folder (whose name ends with Previews.lrdata) is 33 GB.

You can move the folder containing the catalog to an external drive, and then double-click the catalog file to launch Lightroom. Note that this may lead to reduced performance. The catalog should ideally be on your fastest disk.

You can keep your photos on the external disk, this will not affect performance.

You can move only the photos or also the catalog to an external drive.

Here's some help for either one: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/lightroom/catalogs/moving/

The size of your catalog is shown in the preferences. Please note that this does NOT include the photos itself!
