Filter function not working correctly with Metadata Color Label Sets other than "Lightroom Default"

I have a problem with the color labels filter functionality, although there has been a fix for a similar issue with Smart Collections in 12.3

Photos with colored labels from Metadata Sets like "Bridge" do not appear, once the color is selected in the filter function.

Setup:

  • LR Classic 12.3
  • macOS Ventura 13.4
  • Apple M1 Max

Steps to reproduce:

  1. set Metadata Color Label Set to "Bridge"
  2. mark any photo with any color label
  3. activate color filter in either library module filter attributes or develop module "Filter" icon menu by selecting any previously set color label

Result:

zero images found: "No photo selected"

Expected Result:

previously labeled photos appear in filtered result

Workaround:

  • Use "Lightroom Default" Color Label Set – works as intended

or

  • select "Show photos with 'Custom' Label" – this at least shows any labeled photo even with "Bridge" labels, but of course not filterable by specific color

Correct answer Bob Somrak

It filters for the selected Label Set for me.

When you change Label Sets does the displayed Label in the thumbnail change to the correct color? If not. maybe you need to reset Preferences if it is not working for you.

This looks like it is working as designed and is not a bug - moving to discussions.

Color Labels appear if the Label Field in Metadata matches the Set chosen. When it does - you see the matching color label

When you switch the set to Bridge,  the Label field no longer matches any of the individual colors and is thus turned to a White label which is not filterable by the non-selected Color set. This allows you to have multiple sets of color labels that do not interfere with one another.

I agree with Rikk that this is working as expected.

As a side note, when testing this I noticed that when you switch Color Label Sets the filter AUTOMATICALLY changes to "Unlabled".  Is this the correct behavior @Rikk Flohr: Photography

I think it is @Bob Somrak.  Otherwise you could end up with an unexpected empty grid.
