Question

How can I stop Lightroom Classic from changing how my NEF files look?

I am importing Nikon NEF files into lightroom classic. The panel shows that there are no adjustments being made. However, when I click a file after first loading, I see the file looking as I think it should just for a split second, then it changes to a much more contrasty look. Then I have to try and adjust to get things back to the look it had for that split second. I'm not sure if it's something in the programming or not. I just want the images to look like they should, just like that split seconf before they change. I have told the software not to make any adjustments before opening. Any ideas or tips? Thanks! MacOS, Lighroom Classic, Assorted nikon cameras.

What @dj_paige wrote, although you can configure LrC to apply a different camera raw default that's based on Adobe's versions of Nikon Picture Control presets. More details of how at below link https://blog.adobe.com/en/publish/2020/06/16/streamline-edits-with-the-improved-raw-defaults

You can also access the camera matching profiles via the 'Profile Browser' in the Develop module. I've attached a screenshot showing where you'll find these profiles.

Note that the screenshot shows profiles for a Canon EOS R5, but there are similar available for most Nikon cameras.

Thank you. I will look into this.

LrC first shows you the JPG preview that is embedded in the raw file, then after a few seconds it renders its own view of the raw, and that's why the appearance changed. This is normal behavior from LrC and cannot be changed or prevented.

That suprises me since jpeg is usually more contrast than the raw. I shoot FLAT with no alterations in camera. The preview from the cameras always look like the quick preview before it changes.

JPGs are developed by the camera software, regardless of your settings. Higher contrast in the JPG? Yes, of course.
