"import at current location" being weird

"Import at current location" shows, at the first step, all new images to be imported (see attached). In this case, they are .DNG files, and all new images are checked. But then when I import, nothing comes through. Lightroom seems to freeze on this import step, progress bar shows no progress, new photos are not imported. Eventually, I press "x" on the progress bar, and a popup says "no images were found".

I can close Lightroom, and try again, and it often works. Or using the "synchronize folder" function can work. Eventaully, the things do get imported, but it has been taking a few attempts recently!

    A lesson learned from my involvement in a completely different and completely unrelated posting. Remember to request System Info, even if I do not think it may not show the cause of a problem. (turned out one line in the authors sys into was an Ahhhhh moment), so:

     

    Please post your System Information as Lightroom Classic (LrC) reports it. In LrC click on Help, then System Info, then Copy. Paste that information into a reply. Please present all information from first line down to and including Plug-in Info. Info after Plug-in info can be cut out as that is just so much dead space to us non-Techs and it takes up vast amounts of scroll space making the reply less readable and less likely that others will bother with your post.

    Everything seems copacetic now. Imports are coming in smoothly & quickly. Sometimes it just seems to take a crap on me, and I end up having to close LR with Task Manager, and reopen. That, of course, messes up the lock file which has to be deleted manually before attempting to reopen LR. After pfutzing for a while, things seem to click back into gear. 

    Drive Q is an SATA drive, about 4/5ths full.

      What type of media is the Q drive?

      And do you have the same issue with other drives?

      It is possible that between now and your previous import in LrC, in a session that you choose Copy, or Copy as DNG, or even Move,  that the destination in that previous import no longer exists, or was renamed, or moved.

       

      Now LrC remembers that particular setting in the Import screen. And if a change occurred, then that destination will be invalid. If you had chosen Copy, Copy as DNG, or Move, you would notice an error message on that.

       

      Oddly, if you choose Add, and that destination is not valid, you do not get the error message. After all, why would the previous destination matter? BUT, an apparent bug (and this may be urban folklore) apparently exists but is not documented (to my knowledge) where LrC is still tripping over the destination being invalid even though ADD is selected.

       

      Getting to the Point

       

      Try a new Import, try to import just one photo. But select Copy. Inspect the destination and correct it. Finish that Import. Then close LrC, restart LrC, and try your desired Import via ADD.

      Seems unlikely that the destination folder would change. Every day, I shoot, transfer the files from an SD card to the new directory (named after the street address of the job), then use "import at current location" to import the files from that new directory. It's always worked fine, just seems to be running into some trouble now. Again, with repeated attempts, it does works.
