Question

Interface is sluggish

Ventura 13.1 and LrC 12.1

While working on the selection of RAW images (turning images continuously in develop mode) or adjusting various parameters, after a while, the following problems frequently occur, although the images can be displayed, rated, and the parameter adjustment itself can be done.

  • Pull-down menus cannot be opened (clickable, but the menu contents are not displayed).
  • The parameters which use slide bar can be changed without any problem, but the parameters which use   pull-down menu, such as white balance and camera profile, cannot be changed (the menu does not open).
  • I can't switch to other running apps.
  • I can't exit LrC with Command+Q, and I can't display the force close window with Command+Option+ESC.

If I leave it in that state, it will recover after 10 to 30 minutes.
However, when I resume my work, it recurs quite often after a while.

CPU is M1 Max.
Both LrC and macos are the combination of the latest version at the moment.
In fact, it was also occurring with a slightly earlier version (LrC 12.0, macos 13.0).
Has anyone else encountered a similar problem?

Are you reportingthat the 'interface sluggish' issue with LrC 12.1 is no longer an issue since you downgraded to macOS Monterey?

Yes.

This issue does not appear to be happening anymore, although it will need to be watched continuously for a while longer.

LrC usually functions without issue with the Mac M1/M2 series. However, there are some known third party conflicts with LrC due to drivers and/or plugins (e.g. Logitec Options). If you have Logirech Options installed, then it will need to be disbled for LrC. It would also be helpful if you would copy/paste the 'System Info' to the forum. You can access same from the LrC Help > System Info menu.

Thank you for your reply.

I don't use Logitec Options.

This is my system info.

LrC is a heavy memory user, especially in the Develop module which uses the GPU a lot, and with memory being shared on M1/M2 systems this can trigger swap. Normally this would only lead to a performance reduction when system disk space is tight. Below is an attempt at establing whether this is what's happening on your system.

When you next experience the issue - take a screenshot of the Activity Monitor > Memory tab. Repeat the screenshot when system recovers. Upload both screenshots to the forum when available. The screenshots should include the memory used by LrC and the Memory Pressure table at bottom (see attached screenshot for example).

In meantime, some questions.

1. How large is you internal SSD and how much free space is left on same?

2. Are you using DxO in the editing steps leading up to the slow down? Some user have expereinced perfromance issue when DxO edited images are saved back to LrC.

3. Are you using Spot Heal (original or AI versions)?

4. What is the display and what resolution setting have you set it for?
