Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-9900K CPU @ 3.60GHz 3.60 GHz
Installed RAM 64.0 GB (63.8 GB usable)
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Edition Windows 10 Pro, Version 21H2
OS build 19044.2364
Lightroom v 12.1

Nividia Quadro P4000   version 528.02

Lightroom has been freezing a minute or so after launch, before I can actually start any work. I've tried optimizing the catalog, which has often worked in the past, but Lightroom freezes partway through the optimizing process, and I have to try to start again. Gone through about a dozen of these cycles of opening, starting to optimize, freezing, and closing it again.

Rebooted system, unsintalled and reinstalled LR. Any ideas?

Sorry, I actually DID see a lock file, and I got rid of it. Now things are running fine.

So, does the lock file hang on after it's supposed to expire sometimes?

The lock file is created upon opening catalog as to prevent that catalog being in use by more than one computer, or instance of lightroom running. The lock file is deleted upon proper closure of Lightroom. If lightroom crashes, or you force quit, then the lock file does not get deleted. Then when you attempt to open the catalog, lightroom refuses, and it fails. Supposedly an error message will appear, but I often do not see it.

And you checked for a lock file?

Do not know what that is!!  LR was running fine this morning, but when I closed it and reopened it, the problem started.
