Lightroom classic - images disappearing when I try to edit.

Question

Using lightroom classic on my desktop pc when I import a new folder I usually go through star rating the ones I want to keep, then edit in batches all those images,.. however when I do this since 2 days ago I can star rate the files, or colour flag them fine, I can re-name them but when it comes to editing whenever I click anything at all- colour correction, exposure, black adjustments etc it seems to vanish the image,.. if I have them star rated then the stars are stripped, if I don't have them rated they seem to vanish from lightroom.
I've been having to export the rated files as DNG's so I can open them in Lr6 which I happen to still have on my machine as a back up, handy really that I still have my old hard copies.
But this is making my processing much slower and limiting my ability to edit properly.

Try resetting the preferences under Edit > Preferences > General.

Press the Alt key, and a button for resetting will appear.

If this doesn't help, please go Help > System Info, click the Copy button, and paste in a new reply here.

You can delete everything after Installed Plugins.

So, I can't re-set preferences under edit- preferences- general, as there's nothing to re-set except warnings?
