Question

photo count after syncing doesn't match hard drive

Old hard drive crashed, but I was lucky to have all 18000 photos (and catalogs) on an external drive (D:).

I copied these to the new computer (C:) and the file count and size matches on C & D.

LR showed 18000 photos on the old computer.

LR shows only 11000 photos on new computer, after syncing.

All folder locations (incl. sub folders) are correct.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, in advance.

Your words "after syncing" has me worried. Did you re-import the photos?

Or did you re-link the photos?  (as in this help article)-

MISSING FILES & FOLDERS (Adobe link)

This has mysteriously fixed itself, and I suspect it had something to do with dropbox (I failed to mention Dropbox was involved.)  There were only a couple of  ("!") unlinked folders to re-link on the new PC, but thousands of photos were missing from the catalog.  I synced with the "do not import duplicates" button selected, so no duplicates were imported.  Each time I synced this way, more photos appeared.  And just now, another 5000 photos appeared!  This is two days after starting this process.  Weird, but good.  Everything "seems" to look okay now!  Thanks for responding.

Two points of interest-

1) Dropbox is often a problem, as LrC likes to see the original files 'locally' to be able to build previews, etc.

2) I am sorry to tell you that 'Syncing the folders' and importing with "do not import duplicates" is the very wrong way to re-link photos to an existing Catalog for two reasons:  a) nothing from history, edits, VCs, Collections, etc, etc, are restored by any Sync Folder/Import process. b) You are possibly left with many 'Missing' photos in the catalog as well as the newly imported photos.
