Question

Selection is lost after multiple move fails

Issue: When drag/drop to move multiple files to another folder fails because some files already exist, only one image is left selected instead of the selection that was made by the user.

  • Lightroom Classic Version Number: 12.4
  • OS Version Number: MacOS 13.4.1(c)

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Take a folder of images A and duplicate (probably outside Lightroom) the whole folder making folder B
  2. Import folder B (with Don't Import Suspected Duplicates turned OFF) to LR
  3. Select three images in folder A in Lightroom, drag to B
  4. Click Move on the "Moving Files to Disk" box
  5. Click OK on the "There was an error copying..." box
  6. Note what is selected on the gallery view

Expected result

After the error message is displayed and you are returned to the main window, the three images you tried to copy should be highlighted/selected.

Actual result

When you are returned to the main window, only the first of the three images is highlighted.

Impact:

While this is a minor error, it is inconvenient because if the user has made a complicated manual selection of many images, the user loses the selection and cannot see what was supposed to have been moved in order to progress further.

Probably a workflow issue.

Starting with, why are you duplicating photos?

And, why are you attempting to have duplicates in your catalog?

Probably a workflow issue.

No, you are misunderstanding.  It is an ERROR condition, but Lightroom should handle the error more consistently and helpfully.

There are workflow situations when a user can attempt to move photos and discover they already exist.  Examples could include:

- a camera has reset its numbering and when filing photos, the user discovers some image numbers / file names have been used more than once

- the user has recovered some files from backup or found some photos in unexpected places (eg if they had been edited on a mobile and then re-synced to the desktop) and is moving them to the right folder, only to discover that some are already there.

In these cases Lightroom handles the error correctly, by presenting an error box.  But it should leave selected ALL the images that it was unable to move.  That allows the user to see what images in that operation need to be reassessed.
