(Win10) LR Classic 12.4 slows way down after 15 minutes of culling/zooming/viewing images

Hello - I have been reserching this for some time but have never asked a forum - so hopefully you can help.
I have an updated, what I consider to be high end computer (specs attached), that when I am culling (viewing, zooming, etct) in LR Classic, things slow way down over only about 15 minutes. If I restart, things improve, only to slow down again. I have done all the common suggestions on speeding up LR but without any benefit.
Is this common, or just with my setup?
Any suggestions on fixes?
Thank you.

Hello Hale,

I have GeForce 3060 12GB, and for me helps to downgrade graphic card driver and also version of Lightroom. Currently I use LrC 12.3. and graphic driver ver. 536.23. With other tips about improve performace, the lightroom finaly works as  smooth as before the latest updates for me.

Hi Peasac - thank you for that - I'd like to try.  Can you help me on how I can downgrade my driver?  Thanks!

I suggest that downgrade LrC to 12.3 to check whether that's sufficient to get your performance back to what you had previously. The process is relatively quick and easy using the Creative Cloud App. I've attached a screenshot that shows where you can downgrade from.

Dealing with the same thing. My computer crashed twice (with the blue screen of death) after trying to edit my last session.  I'm beyond frustrated.

A BSOD in such circumstances is near enough invariably an indication of a hardware problem. Lr pushes hardware hard enough to trigger a BSOD, but it won't be the underlying cause of it.

Hale,  I am experiencing the same thing.  After some use culling images LR gets to be painfully slow on even the most modest operations (e.g. expand stacks, collapse stacks, update images as I move along the film strip, etc).  This is not what I have expeienced in the past but I am not sure exactly what update or change has introduced this behavior.  I have done all the usual stuff (restart LR, reboot, delete preferencs, 3090 GPU on/off, optimize the catalog, update drivers, delete and reinstall LR, etc, etc)  Sometimes there is an immediate improvement but after only a short time it slows to a snails pace.  I have monitored CPU and memory use with the Task Manager but have never seen unusually high CPU or Memory usage.  The only strange behavior is that sometimes when I exit LR, LR uses ~15% of CPU for a few minutes after it exits.  I have the catalog and previews on a super fast SSD (Samsung 980 Pro) and the raw image files on a fast SSD (Samsung 970).  This slowdown is a major impediment for culling images.

DClark, thank you for that.  Sounds like the exact same issue - sorry you experience this too.

So do you just restart LR after 15 minutes, or do you have another work around?

I have no work around.  I just finished culling and processing a large number of images and it was excruciating.  I have another batch that needs culling and processing and the only work around I have found is to put off culling/processing.  Sooner or later I need to get that done and I am dreading it.  I'm hoping for an update that fixes it.

Hey, @Hale Kell. Welcome to the Lightroom Community. Thanks for sharing the details you have already. Does it slow down after a specific set of steps? Is there a noticeable pattern to this behavior?

Where is the catalog stored? Internal drive or external drive?

Besides Lightroom getting slow, monitor the TaskManager to know if the RAM usage peak, abnormal temps, CPU usage, and unexpected read/write operations.

The GPU drivers for the 3060 TI are slightly dated. You're working with 528. 24 & the current version is 536.67. Check here for updates: https://www.nvidia.com/en-in/geforce/drivers/

To begin troubleshooting, test some variables like:

  • Unplug any external peripherals & use wired input devices.
  • Go to Edit > Preferences > Performance > Uncheck 'Generate previews in parallel'
  • Go to Lightroom > Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor > Set it off if it is on Custom or Auto. If this shows you any differences, please check this article to troubleshoot further: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/troubleshoot-gpu.html

Let me know how it goes. Thanks!

Hi Sameer, thank you for responding.

Things just slow down as I progress thru the culling process.  Nothing seems to set it off other than time and number of images looked at. I don't notice a pattern of behavior other than this.

Disk set up details:
C Drive: Internal 1TB SSD houses LR and catalog, Internal 2, 2TB SATA drives (D Drive and E Drive) for photos. I also have an external 1TB SSD that I am currently working off of lately (G Drive) for a trip I was on recently.
Main C Drive has 287MB used, 647MB fee, Data drive D has 1.33 TB used, 490MB free, Data Drive E has 1.09TB used and 740MB free, External SSD Drive G has 416MB used and 514MB free
Location of catalog is on main internal SSD - Drive C
Image number in catalog: 35,216

I have monitored the Task Manager and I don't see anything out of the ordinary until things start to slow down, then the CPU goes has high as 24% and Memory 81% .

I did as you suggested, and unchecked "generate previews in parallel" and turned of GPU.

I do think this helped some, but it still became more and more slow/sluggish and at times being unresposive.

Does this give you more information to help me with?

Thx.

Would wired devices make a difference?  I have never heard this before.

Let me know what else you would need from me.
Looking forward to your reply.
