Cannot import files to lightroom on ipad pro

I am trying to directly import files from a external drive on ipad pro. I can find the files and select them, the import starts, will run for some time and then stops when it says it is syncing but without importing the files and no error. 
what is the problem ?

there is plenty of space on the ipad and in my creative cloud

@sumostrik are you happening to be inside the Recently Added folder when running into this issue?
If so, please try to select any other album or All Photos when importing to see if it helps.

    How many files are you importing when this fails?
    Does this occur if you e.g. create a new folder and import to that folder?
