how to select a portion of a photo and copy to another part

We use this program to photograph watches. We use a black background and put the watch in a holder to take the photo against the black background. What i want to do is grab a portion of the black bacground and paste it over the holder to make it invisible and give the imperession the watch is floating in thin air. Can any of you advise how to accomplish this?
