Importing photos

How can I import photos to Lightroom cc and not have them sync? I would like to edit them first in Lightroom and save them in JPEG so the files are not so large.

This forum is for Lightroom Classic which does not sync everything to the cloud. In Lightroom Cloudy (now called Lightroom Desktop extremely confusingly and no longer called Lightroom CC), you can pause the sync from the little cloud icon at the top right. The whole point of Lightroom Cloudy is to sync everything though and you generally do not want to replace your files by jpegs as you won't be able to go back on your editing.
