Is it possible to filter or make smart collection of photos with specific dimensions (long/short edge) so I can group ones out of my active catalog from a common XxY picture size in my camera to work on?

Sounds like you are talking about Classic instead of Lightroom Cloudy which this forum is on (Adobe made some very bad naming decisions creating enormous confusion) but anyway. You cannot filter or make a smart collection on dimensions. You can only filter on whether the aspect ratio is portrait, landscape, or square.

There is a third party plugin called anyfilter that probably can do it: http://www.johnrellis.com/lightroom/anyfilter.htm
