Trouble adding photos

So this is probably user error/ignorance, but I am unable to see photos that I'm adding in "All Photos".  When I upload the image from folder (it's in a Google folder) it shows that the upload was successful, but it's not in "All photos". When I try to add it again it says "skipping duplicate download."  Is there another place I should be looking for these photos???
