Color Shift Going going from LR to PS using Benq Monitor

I recently started editing in LR and PS using a Benq monitor connected to an iMac.

 

When I do edit-in from LR to go to PS the colors in PS do not match the ones in LR. I have PS set to Prophoto RGB. 

Monitor was recently calibrated. 

 

If I move the PS panel to the iMac and back to the Benq the color problem appears to be corrected.

 

Thoughts?

Yes, this is a problem that seems to affect some users with MacBook Pro/iMac + external display.

 

What happens is that the wrong monitor profile is used. Some users have reported that setting the external as main display has solved it.

 

I don't have any links handy right now, but there's been a lot of threads about this, both here and in the feedback forum. The underlying problem appears to be how displays are assigned by the video card and operating system, on systems that have an integrated display. It happens exclusively on MBP/iMac + external, it has never been reported from desktop systems with multiple displays.

 

It has previously been seen on some Windows laptops as well (not recently) - but that reinforces the working assumption that it's the integrated display that messes this up.

I have a similar issue with photoshop/lightroom and benq monitor as an external display for MacBook Pro. I have set the external monktor as the primary monitor but the issue persists. Is there another solution to this?

I don't really have another answer than the one I gave above, but it should be noted that BenQ has a long history of bugs and problems in their calibration software. For some reason they can't seem to get it right. I don't know if they make it themselves or have it subcontracted to someone else.

 

I suspect the underlying problem is that the profile is not strictly written to correct icc spec, with the result that it's not accepted by the operating system or the application or both.

 

One thing you can look for is profile policies, if there are options for that in the software. Notably, LUT (table)-based profiles can be problematic in some configurations. Matrix-based profiles are simpler and always more well behaved. The same goes for the version 4 spec. Change it to version 2, for the same reason. If there are no options for this anywhere, it should be v2 matrix.

 

You can also try a different calibrator, but then you may lose the huge advantage of direct communication with the monitor in high bit depth, instead doing all corrections in the video card. That's much more vulnerable to banding and other artifacts. DisplayCAL is free - but the same caveats apply. Keep it simple! DisplayCAL is full of complex options that only increase the likelihood of complications and problems.
