How to reveal items off canvas?

Hello all,

I am revisiting photoshop after a few years now, perhaps I've forgotten some of the basics. I could not find much help on google regarding this.. My basic problem is that layers beyond the canvas are hidden in the gray area, how do I have them visible all the time? Like in the older versions of Photoshop. Please see attached.
