Photoshop will not open pdf created with photoshop

This has happened twice now. I created a file, with several layers and saved as a pdf, but then could not reopen it in Photoshop. I could open in Acrobat, Illustrator and other programs, but as a flattened image - not as a layered document. In photoshop I get this error - "Could not complete your request because of a program error." This only happens to files that become large (20 mb) and have layers.  I am using a Macbook Pro running High Sierra.

    Hi,

    I'm basically having the same issue and have made sure that my Photoshop is updated to the latest version. I was able to open one file that was save as a PDF and the other two I worked on won't open because I get the error that the files are not compatible. Moving forward I won't save my files as PDFs but I need to access these files. Any advice???
