Placing an eye in a knot hole

For our school yearbook, I'm trying to place an eye in a knot hole of a wooden fence and have the appearance that the eye is behind the knot hole.  My attempts just won't show the depth? It seems like it should be simple, but I can't figure it out. Can someone walk me through this?

It could be as simple as giving the eye an Inner Shadow.  Shading is a big part of depth.

I cheated with the knot hole using Liquify to shape it to fit the eye.  Always make the layer a Smart Object when using Liquify, because you can keep modifying the shape nondestructively.  It makes life so much easier.

Please try to mask the knot hole and make it invisible. After that, place the eye on the layer below. If you encounter any issues, could you please post a screenshot with the layers panel visible?

How good are you with Photoshop?  How much depth can I go into?  Or do you want to keep it simple?

It would help if you uploaded the fence image to this thread so we know what you are working with.

I'm just a beginner. Youtube helps a lot, but it didn't have a video for that..
