Question

Replace base layer in clipping mask stack?

Hi,

is there a quick way to replace the base layer in clipping mask stack without loosing the clipped status of the above layers? Let's say I have a foto and applied like 10 Clipping mask layers to it as soon as I want to replace the foto I loose the clipping status of the other layers and have to rebuild them manually since PS does not clip mask on multiple layers at once. Tedious.

Is a folder for the base layer the only way here or is there a layer replace shortcut hidden somewhere? Thx!

If you have the replacement image as a layer in the same file, you can select the base layer and use the Apply Image command to "stamp" the source replacement image layer to the target base layer. This doesn't affect the clipped layers above the base.

There are other options, multiple routes to the same goal.

Can you clarify where the replacement image is? Is it an existing layer in the layered file, or is it a separate document (currently open or not)? Is the replacement image the same pixel size and position as the current base layer and is this important or not?
