Smart object for mockup issue

I'm trying to make a mockup, so I created a shape, got it just right, then turned it into a smart object. Although, when I click on the smart object and it shows in the window, the object isn't flat and straight on, but instead the shape of the shape in the original file. How do I fix this?

Trace shape then rotate as you want shape to appear in edited Smart Object. Convert to Smart Object then rotate to match phone screen. Edit Smart Object, screen shape will be as you want it.

Smart Object rotation and transformation will not affect original shape position.

If you trace screen as it is then convert to Smart Object, when editing Smart Object it will deliver or display original shape as it was before converting to Smart Object.

I am not entirely sure where you are up to with this, but I want to add that if it is not already the case, that you start again with the screen perpendicular to the document bounds (square to the screen) and make it a Smart Object while in this state.  This makes thing so much easier to edit and update.

It's super easy now that we can radius corners with rectangular shape layers.  You can also add an inside stroke of suitable colour to represent the frame.

My preferred method in this sort of situation is to use this base layer as a template, and clip artwork to it.  This allows you to have a small overhang so an apparent perfect fit, and the way this works with Shapes is that the stroke remains outside the clipped image layer.

Thanks, Bojan. It seemed the best solution was to draw a rectangle, convert it to a smart object, and then edit the shape as needed.
