Applying a selection

I have been using Photoshop Elements v6 for years without a problem, but now I am stuck, perhaps because of sme change. I can select an object with any selection tool, but I can't apply the selection. Pressing Enter doesn't do it, nor anything else I have tried. I must have missed something, but what?

    Am I still missing something?

Shut off the visibility of the background layer by clicking on its eye icon in the layers palette.

The checkerboard pattern surrounding the selection on layer 2 denoted transparency.

I suspect that you have something on layer 1 as well. If so, shut that off as well.

After you have made the selection and see the outline ("marching ants") surrounding it, press CTRL+J to place the selection on its own layer. Next, activate the move tool and position the selection to where you want it, and, resize with the corner handles of the bounding box, if necessary.

Very helpful as far as Ctrl J. At that point the thumbnail of the layer ("Layer2") is exactly as it should be, but the screen remains unaltered even though it is titled "Layer2". I can't get the thumbnail to take over the screen. Am I still missing something?
