Dimension CC Problems

So I downloaded Dimension CC as a free trial with a view to buying it if I got on with it.  When I create a new document I am met with a chequered background.  As a result when I drop an image or object on to it nothing appears even though I think the program thinks it is there.

Any ideas how I can fix this?  Is there something I am missing or need to change?  I would appreciate any help as I am a bit of a noob.
