Elliptical marquee tool

When I go to select the elliptical marquee tool or the Lasso  or magic want tool I get a message "no pixels are more than 50% selected the selection edges will not be visible", it used to work on whatever I selected but now I get the above message. What am I doing incorrectly? Thanks
