Photoshop Elements 9 Saving Error

Good afternoon! I'm a bit stumped, because after Googling for answers, I can't find anyone else having a similar error. Basically, any time I go to save a jpg file, it appears as (just giving a random save name here) "test.jpg" instead of just "test." That makes renaming multiple files VERY frustrating, because I have to physically retype everything (i.e. "test1," "test2," etc.) because it keeps saving as "test1.jpg," "test2.jpg," etc. This literally has never happened before a couple weeks ago, so I'm not sure what I've done. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program from my disc, but that unfortunately didn't fix the error. I've tried saving as different file types, too, and they all tack that additional file type onto the end of the name. And unfortunately, just throwing a number on the end of "test1.jpg" and making it "test1.jpg2" nullifies the file since there is no such thing as a jpg2. That's why I have to manually retype the name of 25+ frames when I'm making gifs. Any help/insight would be very much appreciated! Thank you in advance!
