PSE 10 Catalog

My computer hard drive crashed.  I replaced it and have recovered all the files (I hope) from an online backup service.  I did not realize that I needed a backup of the catalog, so I don't have a backup file.  I do have the program data files for Adobe.  Is it possible to restore the catalog from these files?  There is also an issue with the path.  The new computer defaulted using my last name in the user files and the old computer was setup with my first name.  Any suggestions?

The good thing is that you should find the original catalog folder in your backup. It's a folder containing a 'catalog.pse10db' database file. You can copy this whole folder where you want.

The bad thing, as you have stated, is that the 'paths' to the files are no longer valid.

If you try to open the organizer with the copied catalog by double clicking on that catalog.pse10db file, you'll see all your images as 'disconnected'.

You'll have to use the 'reconnect' function of the organizer to solve the problem.

Photoshop Elements (PSE) knowledge base.

In most cases you'll have to guide the search towards the relevant folders, that can take time, but it's worth the effort.

Thanks so much.  Will I add the catalog to the file containing the catalog that was generated when I installed PSE on my new computer? If so, should I rename one of them?  I started this and was asked about over writing files that had the same name.  Will I overwrite them so that the catalog I want takes precedence?

The catalogs folders may be by default on the location you have found (organizer menu Help >> System Information) or where you want (they do appear under 'custom location' in the catalog manager dialog).

Since you can't have two subfolders with the same name at the same level under a common master folder, a new catalog folder should be renamed. It's probably easier to copy the original catalog elsewhere in a custom location on your new computer, since the catalog manager has the option to move the catalog back to 'accessible for all users', which is the default.
