pse14 restore confusion

i was moving to a new laptop.  i had all my files on an external hard drive. i did a back up on that same hard drive and restored on my new laptop to the internal hard drive.  during the restore I checked restore from hard drive and new location c:/photos and restore original folder structure.

when I opened the organizer it shows the location as the external drive, not the new folder on the internal drive.

when I looked at the new location in file explorer it has all the restored photos but organizer is linked to them on the external drive.

i'm so confused...  and I couldn't find a similar thread.

    the tyl file is dated today but the buc file is much older. does that mean that the backup wasn't correct even though i received the message that the backup was completed successfully?

    i thought maybe it was a catalog issue so I went to manage catalogs, catalogs accessible to all users and chose my catalog, which was my only choice.  when I did that it pulled up the 300 photos that I had already imported just playing with the program.  Now the restored photos are gone from organizer...  but the photo files are all in the new folder that was created in the restore, just not in the organizer. 

    i assumed that the 300 i was playing with would be overwritten by the restore.

    Catalogs accessible to all users should only contain an empty new catalog resulting from the installation on the new computer. If you restore anywhere stating the destination folder (Photos for instance) that is considered as a 'custom' destination, even if you select the C: drive.

    So, the restored catalog should be somewhere as a folder under your 'Photos' destination folder.

    You have to set the catalog manager to 'custom' destination and not 'accessible to all users'.

    To find the restored catalog folder, use the search function of the explorer to find a file named 'catalog.pseXXdb', XX being the version number). It's in the desired folder, which is hidden by default in the explorer. You may have to set the explorer to show hidden files and folders.

    Edit: once you have found the correct folder, simply double click on the catalog.pseXXdb file to open the organizer with the restored catalog.

    that helped, thanks,  only issue now is that catalog shows the location of the photo file as the E: which is the external hard drive I restored from.  if I go to the new location in file explorer there are files there but they show up as the other drive in general file info. in PSE
