Refine Edge tool

I use PSE 15.  I am unable to get clean edges when using the refine edge tool.  Plus, there seem to be a film or darker area where I go around my subject edges.  I photograph people and all the you tubes I watch make it to look easy for clean and sharp edges around hair. But, I can not even get clean edges on the persons body. suggestions please.  Thanks
