Trouble editing a slideshow

When I select create a slideshow, the program generates a preview and then suddenly distorts the screen so I can't access any of the editing features. I have updated the program and tried everything else I can think of. Here is a screenshot of what it looks like. The taskbar at the top is cut off. I can watch the preview or hit the esc key to exit but nothing else. Changing the display resolution doesn't seem to have an impact either.  Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
