Changing video edit locations on computer

Is there a way in Premiere Pro to have footage ( projects )  that are worked on put on another hard drive? My system hard drive is filling up fast from some of the 4k footage I am shooting with. I'd like to do all editing on a dedicated ssd hard drive other than my main sysgtem hard drive.

Thanks in advance,

C,. Harris

The project files themselves don't normally get very large ... they're primarily a text file, really.

But the previews, caches, databases and pek files can total quite a few gigs. Which is why you need to set those where you have room and also speed of access for the program.

Thank you very much, I am able to manage my media cache files a little better now. I purged and cleaned them and gained 21 gig of space. Set up folders on seperagte drives and will do editing on a dedicated ssd.

    Again Niel...........Thanks!

    Hmmm ... I'll have a go here.

Premiere doesn't create video files until you export a file, or tell it to render previews. So ... the media being worked always lives on the drives you put it on. So ... park your media on a drive, Premiere references it (and uses it) from that drive.

Premiere does create a media cache file, a cache database file, and preview files along with audio preview files. In the Projects setting dialog and in the Preferences dialogs, you tell Premiere where to put those files. It has a default of course, but ... their is an assumption that users will reset those locations to whatever locations work best for their needs.

So ... go through the Project settings dialog and check and change things in the Scratch Disk tab, and ... there's several tabs of the Preferences dialog with locations for various types of Premiere files.

    R_Neil_Haugen:

Thank you for the response. These filese that PP creates -media cache file, cache datebase file and preview files. Are their size related to the amount of video ( file ) shot? I shot a project that totaled over 100 gig. Would those files be big as well? I was able to set a PP projects file on a ssd dedicated just for editing, did that thru the scratch disk part of a new project. PP is installed on my " C " drive, if I import a large project off another drive and brought those into PP would my " C " drive use up a lot of space for these files that PP makes?

Absolutely. In fact it's a good practice to not use your system hard drive to do any editing or footage saving.

    1. Move footage to hard drive.
    2. Open Premiere Pro. It will show missing files.

    3. Reconnect to the new location.
