Question

Exporting clips with visible cross dissolve frames

OK so I have a music video edit, we need to get the clips sent over to the retoucher but there are lots of fades in my edit. I am trying to figure out a way to be able to export a clip without the fade but have the clip be at the length of the fade in to fade out of the dissolve transition. Is this possible? Instead of it just exporting the clip in full 100% view, I want it to show 100% of the frames from dissolve start all the way to dissolve out.

if the clip is 4 seconds and each fade is 2 seconds, my exported clip would be 8 seconds long and 100%, allowing the retoucher the full shot, which I would then replace on my timeline and add the transition back.

Select the clips on the timeline, do a Render and Replace setting to a good intermediate codec like ProRes 422. Set that process to use handles at least as long as your transitions and a bit more.

Then copy those to another folder, deliver those to your colorist.

On return, replace the clips on the sequence with those provided by the colorist.

As you'venot done this before, I'd suggest selecting a short bit and testing the full process. Render and replace, delivery to colorist, replacement of original with graded clips from the colorist.

Everyone's mileage always varies ...
