Imported video drags as a JPEG in the timeline

When I drag an imported video file to the timeline, its showing as a JPEG instead of a video (The JPEG shows as a pink/ purple file in the timeline instead of blue).  I have already used the video file previously in the same project but accidently deleted the original file and re-imported it. It doesnt help that my videos were filmmed in two different qualities and now one quality doesnt play, the other quality changes frames (managed to fix this in sequence settings).  Im assuming that the quality is the issue however I have filmmed on two different cameras before and never had this issue in the editing suite.

Please help.

I had this same problem on a 2024 MBP M3 Max w/ 48GB memory, so it has nothing to do with the system capabilities.  If you connect your iPhone and import media, and then try to drag media directly from the "Imports" folder which is in the Photos app, it will import into PP as a JPEG with no audio.

The actual fix is to open Finder and then copy the files from the Imports folder in Photos over to a folder in the Finder app.  You can drag and drop from one to the other.  This can take time depending on the video file size.  But once copied over, you can drag the MOV files into PP from the Finder folder and they will import normally as video files with audio.  Hope this helps someone out there.

Could you list your computer specs and what version of Premiere Pro you are using?

Also, you might try setting your renderer to "Software Only", which is found in Project Settings > General, and see what happens.

Im using adobe premire pro 2022 with footage from an iphone12 pro. My laptop is a MacBookAir (2017).

I tried rendering to software only and a red line appeared above my footage in the timeline?

Hi SeatonJS405,

Sorry for the problem. Is your footage 4K or HD? If it's 4K, your computer system might not be powerful enough. Please check the system requirements here: https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/system-requirements.html I hope we can help!

Thanks,

Kevin
