I ask because when I am trying to sync audio that was recorded externally on a zoom. and when I move the file it turns into a plain color. here is a screen shot to show you what I'm talking about.

is there anyway to get the waveform to move along while dragging it?

Don't drag it with the mouse. Once it is selected, use Command (Control) + Left Arrow or Command (Control) + Right Arrow to move the clip.

To move the clip faster, add the Shift key to the key combo.

Get it close, then Nudge it into place.  The Nudge will retain the visible waveform.
