New to Premier - Why is playback stuttering on an M1 Pro?

Ive just swopped to Premier Pro from Final Cut Pro since purchasing a new M1pro Macbook Pro.

Working on a simple, single 45 second timeline with just speedramps applied at the moment on simple cuts and the playback on the editor is HORRENDOUS - never seen anything like it before - Can't beleive this is normal and already looking at switching back as I'm finding it impossiple to edit on.

The clips are "Video Codec Type: MP4/MOV H.264 4:2:0 (Full Range)" 3840 x 2160 @2926_2.97fps.

Playback resolution is 1/2 (tried all the others below and makes no difference)

High quality playback is 'off' - (& makes NO difference if its on)

Ive tried rendering the dtuttering clips & render & replace? (not sure what I'm doing tbh)

Just never seen snything like this the Mac's fans aren't even spinning up - so It's harly pushing the hardware.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

You need to render the timeline before playing back, especially when doing speedramping or conforming 60p to 24 slowmo.

If you see yellow above clips, they need to be rendered otherwise you will never playback smoothly.

Hi Koshington,

Sorry for the performance issues. H.264 is non-performant and sometimes needs to be transcoded in certain systems, especially if it contains a variable frame rate and effects are added. The other factor is that Quick Sync is unavailable, which assists H.264 and HEVC playback in Intel-based Macs.

Which camera was used to create these video clips?

Alternatively, you can create proxies. If you do that, I can recommend you use the ProRes ones. FCPX creates proxies by default, I'm fairly sure, so the performance improves if you do the same in Premiere Pro. Let us know if you need help with that.

Thanks,
Kevin
