Question

SOME (not all) .mov files show as audio only in Adobe (Premiere, Media Encoder)

I have a project that was filmed on two different cameras - all the footage was given to me by the cameraman as .mov (QuickTime) files which DO play both audio and video on my Mac as QuickTime movies. When I try to transport into Premiere (2018 CC) though, the files from ONE of the cameras does not show video (only transfers as audio). When I put these files in Media Encoder, they are read as "no video" The other .mov files (from the other camera) DO show up in Premiere with both Video and Audio. I have the latest version of Quicktime installed.

I tried exporting the files that don't work to a different format (the only options available in QT were 1080, etc.) - but they wouldn't even transfer--error message came up after a long time of the computer trying. I tried manually renaming to .mp4 - didn't work.

Are all of these files from the one camera corrupt somehow, even though they show up in Quicktime just fine? Do I need to have these files given to me in a different format from the source (the files from the camera) or can I re-code them somehow through Adobe? Changing them in Quicktime does NOT seem to work.

Thanks!

I'm not sure if you've already got an answer to this or not, but just wanted to share my experience (unfortunately, haven't found a fix yet either, but hopefully this helps someone as they're troubleshooting).

I've run into the same issue, but for me the .mov files won't open with both video and audio (Adobe says they're just audio files) in After Effects. When I try to convert them using Media Encoder, same issue - ME won't read the video from the clips, just audio.

The only fix I've found so far is to revert to a previous version of AE. However, this introduces more issues on my system. When I downgrade, even when both Premiere and AE are on the same version, dynamic linking between the two doesn't work normally.

Anyways, it's not a fix, but it is a workaround until Adobe comes out with another version that fixes this bug.

    My system info:

    AE version: 15.1.1 (Build 12)

    Premiere version: 12.1.1 (Build 10)

Media Encoder version: 12.1.1 (Build 12)

Like I said, this doesn't solve the problem, but hopefully it'll help someone who can figure out a way to resolve it.

Sorry, Neil, I think this is the screenshot you wanted:

    Hi Neil,

Thanks for replying. I don't know the name of the two cameras (cameraman is out of town til next week) but both are professional video cameras. This is a clip from the camera that does not allow video (only audio) to be read in Premiere.

    Here is the MediaInfo screenshot:

In contrast, this is the MediaInfo from a clip from the OTHER camera that DOES show video and audio in Premiere.

Is it possible to convert the footage that doesn't work to a format that does without losing quality? Can I do it on my computer or do I have to ask the cameraman to reformat and then transfer all the footage to a drive again?

    Thanks so much!

What was the camera that produced the non-working files? And could you post a very short snip of one of them on your reply?

Also ... download MediaInfo & install. Drag/drop one of the odd files onto that app's icon and when it opens, go into the Tree view of the app. Screen-grab a shot of the Video section and include that in your reply also.
