Romove or edit invisible topics

I have a manual with several topics.  On occation I go to enter a Topic and it says that the topic is already in use.  It's not anywhere visible.  How do I locate the Topic it's talking about to delete or edit it?

    Are you using source control in which case someone else could be accessing the topic?

    If you are sure no one else has the file, close the project and delete the <projectname>.cpd file. Then open the project again. Can you open the topics then?
