Copy and paste produces gibberish an

We have a PDF a client sent us that was created with Distiller. We cannot copy the text from it and paste it into Word or Notepad. We just get gibberish. I think it has to do with the fonts used. Under document properties we see that the fonts used are called T1,T2,T3 and T4 and encoding says Custom. Actual Font Type says Type 3. Short of telling the customer to create their PDFs differently how can we get around this?

Hi Jasona26469999,

You are right in thinking that it is a font related issue, if the font used in your pdf file, not present locally on your computer, MS-word would not recognize it hence the gibberish result when pasting.

The workaround for this would be to either get the specific fonts installed on your computer so that MS-word can access it or change the font on the entire pdf file so it uses a font that MS-Word recognizes.

Please reply in case of any further queries.

Try selecting the text, right-clicking it, and choosing "copy with formatting". This works for me.

Hello, I am dealing with a similar issue, and I wonder if you could provide some more specifics regarding how to go about changing the font within the PDF file so that the text can be copied out properly. Although the suggestion of Mell17 below works on a case-by-case basis, I am dealing with a large group of PDFs that I need to have indexed ("read") by another program, so I am looking for a more general solution. I've been banging my head against the wall for a while, so I would appreciate any help here!
