Question

Highlighting in a large file causes lagging/crash

Currently using version 24.002.20895 of Acrobat Pro.

I use it to open and read large PDF versions of my textbooks. I also use the higlights frequently to help me find and recall important information. I recently had issues where any time I tried to highlight something, the app would freeze for 10-15 seconds, and sometimes crash. I repaired the installation, uninstalled and reinstalled, and then finally saved it as an optimized PDF before it helped. It's been a few weeks and I'm having the same issue again. None of the previous tricks are work. Please help!

Hi @iAmMrT

Sorry for the delayed response and the experience.

An update was recently released; please try updating your app and checking if the issue still occurs. Note that you should try relaunching the app after the update is complete.

When accessing this file, is it located on your machine or stored somewhere on a shared drive?
If it is stored on a shared drive or network drive, try adding the location of the file to Privileged location: https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/enhanced-security-setting-pdfs.html

  • Launch Acrobat.
  • Hamburger icon(New Acrobat) or Edit > Preferences
  • Security(Enhanced)
  • Add the folder or File path to the privileged location
  • Click Ok.
  • Re-launch Acrobat.

Let us know how it works; we will be happy to help.

Try reducing the file size by splitting the PDF into smaller sections or using the "Save as Optimized PDF" feature again. Also, ensure your Acrobat Pro is updated to the latest version to avoid performance issues.
