How to make light gray text black

On Adobe Acrobat DC, how do you make light gray text into black text? The document in question has no color, so I don't want to convert color into anything; I just want to convert gray to black. I have tried selecting Promote Gray to CMYK Black, but that did nothing. If anyone answers, please don't just say "go to Accessibility" or "Go to Preflight" or whatever; I'd be very grateful for instructions as specific as you can! 

If it's not possible to darken the text, I'd settle for darkening the entire document, but I don't know how to do that either. (I don't have either Photoshop or GIMP, and when I tried opening in Word, the document was considerably messed up.)

You can use a preflight profile to map the gray to 100% black, here is a link to a related discussion with instructions:
